Born and raised in Dumfries, Scotland, studied Industrial Design at Napier University in Edinburgh, graduating with BSc in 1980. Subsequently attending the Royal College of Art in London achieving a master’s degree in Transportation Design 1982. Started his career as a designer for the PSA group in Coventry and then Paris. Moved to the Ford Ghia studio in Turin, Italy in 1988, amongst other projects responsible for the Design of the Ghia Via and Lagonda Vignale Concept cars. Transferred to Dearborn, MI in 1995 as a Design Manager, worked on various product lines thru 2001. Appointed Head of Mazda Design Sep 2001 moving to Hiroshima, Japan overseeing the redesign of the complete Mazda portfolio. Returned to the USA in 2006 as Design Director for Cars and SUVs. In October of 2013 he was appointed the 6th Vice President of Design for Ford Motor Company. During his tenure as VP his achievements include the revival of the Lincoln Brand and it’s growth in China, the 50th Anniversary Mustang, the 2017 Ford GT the expansion of Ford Design in China. He retired from the role in May of 2021, amongst his last projects that have been launched were the latest Ford Bronco, Mustang Mach-E and the F150 Lightning. He is now enjoying retired life in Ann Arbor, pleased to spend more time with his lovely wife Mary and playing with old cars.
