CHRIS BANGLE
MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CHRIS BANGLE ASSOCIATES
Chris Bangle was born in Ravenna (Ohio) in 1956. After attending the University of Wisconsin and graduating from the Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, California), from 1981 to 1985 he was a designer at Opel and then moved to Fiat becoming Director of Fiat Centro Stile in 1992. Later that year he was named the first American Director of Design at BMW with responsibilities for Mini and Rolls-Royce Design when those brands entered the portfolio, a role he filled for 17 years.
After leaving BMW in February 2009, Chris founded Chris Bangle Associates s.r.l. The studio’s first automobile design, REDS, was awarded the 2018 Chicago Athenaeum’s Good Design Award.
Under his leadership, BMW Group Design was awarded the 2000 Red Dot for Design Team of the Year. Among Chris’ personal citations are the Life Time Achievement Award both for car design in 2016 from Eyes On Design and from Compasso D’Oro in 2018. He was most recently awarded the American Prize for Design 2020-2021.
In addition to the studio’s activities devoted to product and car design, workshops and strategic consultancy, CBA has developed in the last five years a branch dedicated to animation. Their first production, the animation short SHEARA won a special mention in animation at the Montecatini International Short Film Festival in 2020. He is married and has a son.
